PRAWNS SHOULD BE RED SAYS COVERS Arthur
'Red' Covers spoke out this week on the village of Ashurst, which recently announced its
independence from England. The village has declared itself the 'People's Republic of
Ashurst Wood Nation State' or PRAWNS. Whilst Arthur is generally in favour of the move, he
thinks that they should have thought bigger.
"Ashurst's very premise is wrong" argued 'Red'.
"They claim that their right to freedom from taxation derives from a royal decree.
Evidently some of their citizens tried to burn King Ethelred in 979 and failed because he
woke up. None too swift, he then granted them some kind of immunity from taxation. But
self-determination is an inalienable right of man and cannot be given by the descendants
of some warrior tribe ruling through force of arms. I mean, I'm a pacifist, but it would
make more sense if they'd been freed because they'd tossed him on the barbie."
Mr. Covers is clear what he thinks Puckering could gain from such
independence. "The village is the ideal socio-economic unit. We could establish a
self-supporting anarcho-syndicalist commune sharing the wealth and making communal
decisions organised through an elected figurehead. This person could then present the
opinions of the common man, or women, to the outside world. That big house, Stoney Grove,
would go for a start. It would make a nice retirement home for those that have spent their
lives subjugated under an unfair political system."
With these ambitions in mind, 'Red' has plunged into the race for
village elder. " A vote for me is a vote for the people," he claims. And
along with PRAWNS, he's hoping the treacherous currents of politics favour the little
guys. |
