The films we find in cinemas today try to dazzle us with special effects, populating the
screens with digitally-created characters lacking both emotion and depth. In their
desperation for an imaginative idea, producers in recent years have turned to Jane Austen,
whose books still reflect real people in elegant social dramas.
Whilst the Poisoned Pen was appalled at the audacity of any of these
directors to actually change the words of the finest English novelist, he would concede
that some of the attempts made passable entertainment in the less demanding world of the
movie theatre.
