Puckering Closes the GatePuckering achieved another notable victory this week in their match
with Billingsgate. Helped considerably by a fine catch by Simon Tinsley, the Irregulars
scuttled out their opponents for a meager 47. Though Puckering briefly flirted with
disaster at 35-5 they achieved their target without further loss with Tinsley, who
finished unbeaten, holding up his end while Walsham (15) scored the winning runs. Tinsley
did not bowl.
Play was halted briefly when the ball skidded through an
area of dubious consistency and one that caused considerable consternation. The
Billingsgate players actually ran four before the umpires called a halt. Stout, the
nearest fielder and a man of fastidious taste, refused to approach the ball until the
umpires cleaned it. Never the sharpest fielder, he showed a marked reluctance to touch the
ball afterwards and took only a light tea.
Editors note: Rachel's final tally of 8-17 were the best
bowling figures in recorded Puckering cricket history. |
