Image attributed to William "Culpability" Heath, c. 1781
The Grotto at Stoney Grove, 1793 --unsigned This unattributed sketch is in the picturesque style of a more well-known drawing by the Revd. William Gilpin, executed at Painshill in 1772. It would appear that Heath drew inspiration from that feature of Hamiltons Painshill landscape. Whilst Heath must certainly have been familiar with Hamilton's famous garden in Surrey, there is no direct evidence that he visited it.
