Stoney Grove was essentially created by one man, a few women and the passage of time. William Blake was a trader in London who made his fortune in the latter part of the eighteenth century, reportedly from the China trade. Keen to establish himself amongst the wealthiest of the nation, he completed Stoney Grove in 1782.
