The Poisoned Pen With the onset of Spring one's mind tends towards romance. Whilst the Pen has
little time for the modern world of cybersex and infidelity, one might spend a moment
musing on recent cinematic lovers.
So what couples make you smile and think fondly of love? Beatrice and
Benedick in Much Ado? Not a classic perhaps, but we loved Kenneth Branagh and Emma
Thompson together. And on the topic of Shakespearian drama, we must include Lady Viola and
young Will himself in the wonderous Shakespeare in Love. Some may be surprised at my
including Charles and Sebastian from Brideshead Revisited but really, there was a special
first love. And Pride and Prejudice again; but how can you ignore Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy?
We could go Hollywood for Harry and Sally (When Harry Met Sally) or pause to think of the
unlikely combination of Vivian and Edward in Pretty Woman (apologies to the feminists in
our audience). Or shall we rhapsodize about Charles and Carrie in Four Weddings. The Pen
would not, since Andie MacDowell came so close to ruining that film! Perhaps some Italian
romance is in order. Let's consider Moonstruck, with the talented Mr. Cage as Ronnie (who
should have stopped acting whilst he was up) and the incomparable Cher as Loretta.
After all these fond recollections if there were a Mrs. Pen she'd be
getting dinner and a movie! |
