Father Hoole on Animal Rights
There has been much talk of late in the places of public gathering concerning the rights
of animals. As I have been repeatedly asked my opinion on this point, I thought it would
be prudent to respond in this forum.
The Old Testament nothwithstanding, where the slaughter and
sacrifice of animals is mandated and described in detail, we would be better advised to
take our understanding on this matter, as in all matters, from the example of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
The arrangement by Christ for the suicide of a herd of two thousand
swine at Ger'asenes, when he transferred the legion of demons from one man into the swine,
clearly
indicates that the Lord valued the life of one man over the lives of a hundred score pigs.
This account can be found in the fifth chapter of the Gospel of our Lord according to
Saint Mark.
Likewise, the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was accomplished
upon the back of an ass. I believe this would qualify as a position on animal servitude.
And a third, and perhaps contestable point, it that as a first act, upon
his birth, Jesus commandeered a stable and manger, precluding use by the animals for which
they were intended.
I trust these brief comments will suffice to outline my opinion on the
topic, and send you to your Bible in search of further understanding of the issue. I will
be leading the usual Thursday night Bible Discussion at The Empty Noggin in East Imbiben,
and again Friday evening in Puckering at the Village Idiot. I hope to see you there.

Help Wanted, Lady Seeing Red
Lady Jane Elizabeth Palmyra Kitts still needs a groom and general stable
help at Elmsleigh House. The farm manager, John Squelch, had a nasty encounter with
a badger trap and must elevate both feet above his head at least every four hours without
fail. Red Covers must realise that his efforts to raise the masses above their rightful
station in life makes it jolly difficult to find help in this day and age.

PAP not Washed Up Yet
As the last remaining members of Puckering Amateur Players (PAP), we'd
like to take issue with the tone of the Pen's latest column. We have a number of
important artistic works to choose from, including 'My Dinner with Andre,' 'Waiting for
Godot,' or the revised script for 'HMS Pinafore.' We will carry on (though new
members are always welcome).
